Is sour cream or cool whip better for Ambrosia?

We are having a cookout this weekend and I really want to make Ambrosia - and I have noticed that some recipes use sour cream and others use cool whip. I was wondering which tastes better? I've had it once, and I am assuming it was made with cool whip b/c it was very sweet (and very good). BUT, I've never made it myself. Could you combine the two or is that gross? And finally, is it better to make it the night before (to let the flavors marinate and what not)? Thanks ahead of time!Is sour cream or cool whip better for Ambrosia?
I use DAISY brand sour cream for this, the Cool Whip is too sweet. Trust me, use the Daisy brand, it has no thickening agents added, and doesn't have that bitter aftertaste or sour smell to it! You will be hooked forever! I used to use Breakstones and Yoder's, but none can compare to Daisy. When the sour cream mixes with the fruit and the marshmallows, it is magical! I have made with both. The sour cream gives a nice ';balance'; to the sweetness of the salad. The cool whip makes it sweeter -for me.
sour cream and make it the night before.............
I prefer cool whip, too.
Use the cool whip and yes make it the night before.Then stir and see if its too dry before you take it with you to the cookout.Be sure that if it will be outside, that you use the non-dairy cool whip.Hope this helps....
Cool Whip is better. I always like it better the next day after the flavors have had a chance to meld a bit.

Personally i prefer sourcream. Jynxxxed is right, the coolwhip is TOO sweet. I make mine with sourcream, mandarin oranges and mini marshmallows. Then refrigerate it for at least an hour, the longer the better. I am not too crazy about adding other fruit and stuff. But i think the mini marshmallows make this sweet tasting =0]
