Are Sour Cream and Cottage Cheese similarly made?

My boyfriend mentioned the other night that sour cream and cottage cream seem very similiar in texture and taste. I was wondering, are they similar in how they are made, and what they are made of?Are Sour Cream and Cottage Cheese similarly made?
Similar, in that they are dairy products, but different processes. Real sour cream has more butterfat (18%) than real cottage cheese.

Sour cream is usually made by inoculating cream with bacteria, which thicken it. Acids can also be used. Look under ';Cream';:

Cottage cheese is uncured cheese. Rennet, cultures and/or enzymes are used to coagulate and separate the milk into curds and whey. The whey is drained off and you have dry curd cottage cheese. Add something creamy, and you've got the cottage cheese you know. Check under ';Cheese'; in the above link.
